Hat Fit Guide
Find your fit. Then find your lane.
The right hat should feel like it was always yours β settled, comfortable, and easy to forget you're wearing it. A quick measurement is all it takes to get there.
The one-finger check
A well-fitted hat sits level, holds gently at the band, and leaves just enough room to slide one finger between the band and your forehead. No red mark when you take it off. No hand on the crown when the breeze picks up.
How to measure your head
All you need is a soft measuring tape β or a piece of string and a ruler. It takes about thirty seconds.
Wrap
Wrap the tape around your head where a hat naturally rests β about half an inch above your eyebrows and just over the tops of your ears.
Level
Keep the tape even all the way around, resting comfortably β snug against your head, but never pulled tight.
Note
Write down the number in centimeters. If you land between two sizes, choose the larger one β it's easy to adjust down, and impossible to adjust up.
Hat size chart
Match your measurement to the chart below. Most Nubian Lane styles are One Size Fits Most, and many include an inner drawstring or adjustable closure for a fit you can fine-tune.
| Size | Centimeters | Inches | US Hat Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 55β56 cm | 21β β22 in | 6β β7 |

Fit by hat type
Each lane wears a little differently. Here's what to expect from caps, straw styles, structured pieces, and satin-lined hats.
Caps & Adjustable Styles
- Adjustable closures cover roughly 54β62 cm, so nearly every head size is in range.
- Adjust until the cap holds gently on its own β you shouldn't feel pressure at your temples.
- The brim should sit about a finger's width above your eyebrows, not resting on them.
Straw & Sun Hats
- Many styles include an inner drawstring or sizing ribbon β use it to fine-tune before deciding a hat doesn't fit.
- Wide brims can make a hat feel bigger than it is. Judge the fit at the crown, not the brim.
- Headed somewhere breezy? Adjust slightly snugger than usual so the hat stays with you, not the wind.
Wool, Felt & Structured Hats
- Structured crowns hold their shape β which means they don't stretch much. Measure before you order.
- Between sizes? Size up and add foam sizing tape inside the band for a tailored feel.
- A structured hat should sit level across your forehead, about a finger above the brows β never perched on top.
Satin-Lined & Protective Styles
- Measure with your hair the way you actually wear it β over curls, coils, braids, locs, or a low bun.
- Leave a little extra room so the satin lining glides over your hair instead of pressing into it.
- If you switch between styles often, choose the fit that works for your fullest look and adjust from there.
